7 Tips for New Managers

September 20, 2011 in Business Advice

If you’re new to the world of management you may be feeling a tad intimidated by your new environment. Not to worry; most people feel that same way when they first arrive too. Here are 7 tips for new mangers that will help eliminate that intimidated, overwhelming feeling in no time at all.

You’re part of a team; utilize it.

First things first. Take a deep breath and remember this. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it definitely wasn’t built by one person; neither was the company you’re working for. It was only by the process of trial and error, and the team approach, that the founders of the company were able to bring it to where it was when you arrived. The first tip for new managers is to remember you are now part of a team. While it may seem there is so much to do, you don’t have to do it all yourself; that’s what your team is there for.

Listen but don’t always do.

Everyone around you will be trying to give you advice and direction. Some will know what they’re talking about. Others won’t. Really think about what you’re being told and make sure it’s sound advice. Check what they’re saying against what you’ve learn. If in doubt, feel it out some more before deciding. The second tip for new managers is that advice-giving, do-gooders aren’t always right. Listen but don’t always do.

Listen to your team.

There’s nothing worse than being an unheard voice on a team. Make sure you listen to what each team member is saying. This doesn’t mean you need to comply with every wish of your team. That could quickly turn into utter chaos. What it does mean is to make your team feel as if each one of them matters and one of the easiest ways to do that is to listen to them.

Manger not buddy.

One of the most important tips for new managers is to always remember your position and maintain it. There is nothing wrong with getting to know your team. In fact, that’s actually a good idea. Becoming buddies with them, however, is never a good idea. This can lead to jealousies among team members, and sabotage if your so-called “Buddy” someday feels betrayed by you. Remember…manager, not buddy.

Learn every aspect of the business.

If you’re going to manage successfully, you need to know what makes the business tick. Learn everything you can about the company so the direction you give your team is sound advice.

Be yourself

The final tip for new managers is to be you. Don’t put up a front at work and try to be someone you’re not. It won’t be long before your ruse is discovered and you’re labeled a hypocrite. Be yourself, but be a manager at the same time.

How valuable is Google Buzz for Social Marketing?

September 11, 2011 in Uncategorized

Despite the initially tough roll-out, Google Buzz, Google’s social media service, is rolling on and improving rapidly. By committing to release at least one new feature per week, its public accessible functionality is growing faster than competition like Twitter and Facebook. Google buzz is worthy of interest and attention as a viable social marketing tool. Of course, marketers know that keeping up to date with all recent innovations, tools, and programs is crucial for spreading the word and maintaining an online presence which attracts the kind of traffic which turns into return customers and increased productivity. Here are a few reasons why Google Buzz is valuable as a social marketing tool.

Of course, any type of social media marketing is valuable and productive for businesses in our modern online world. However, Google Buzz has distinguished itself from other social media services by having direct integration with Gmail – Google’s popular email program. Google Buzz, like other social media tools, allows users to connect with friends, share links, share video, photos, and other content. One of its most distinct traits is its location-based capabilities which share date with smart phones through a Google Maps feature called the “Buzz Layer.” The “Buzz Layer” allows your online followers to know where you are, who you are, and what you are doing. It also offers full integration with other top social networks; including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. This innovation has led to much interest in using Google Buzz for valuable social media marketing.

Social media marketing is here to stay as a viable tool for getting the message out about your brand, services, and products. There’s no reason why Twitter and Facebook should remain the only games in town in terms of marketing appeal and validity. Google is consistently innovating its own social media tool, Google Buzz, with a variety of helpful compatibilities, functions, and capacities which will rapidly put it int the upper echelon of social marketing tools. Ideally, online marketers will offer a variety of means and services to clients to best promote their business., but Google Buzz will soon be a very valuable and powerful tool in the online marketing arsenal.

Google Buzz is completely compatible with the Apple iPhone and individual versions of the Android O/S. This means it has profound potential as a social marketing aid. Buzz has updated its system not only to support all Android versions, but Nokia, BlackBerry, and a variety of other operating systems make it a complementary service for all smartphone platforms. Between its original, pre-existing capabilities, and the extension into use with all major smartphone platforms, Google Buzz has the potential to become one of the leading marketing mediums available currently.

Google Buzz is a social media solution which aligns nicely with the valuable services all social marketing tools provide. In terms of generating online traffic, this service makes it easy to promote your website, and put your products or services in front of followers, and attract numerous potential customers who may be interested in doing business with you. All of the campaigns launched on Google Buzz are shared publicly with all of your Google Buzz account connections notified of that activity within mere seconds. It is taking so time for folks to become aware of how purposeful this is, so adoption has been a little slow, but more and more, users are discovering that Buzz is an excellent viral marketing platform in addition to being a tool which generates quality traffic to your site.

Everyone wants that powerful tool which works effectively in their marketing arsenal. Even though Google buzz has merits as a viable social marketing medium, once its popularity increases, it is only a matter of time before it becomes a top tool relied upon by brands small and large. Many companies are increasingly designing policies, plans, and procedures which train employees in making the best use of Buzz. Buzz has rich multimedia features, smartphone support, and location-based capabilities which leverage well in terms of marketing and online presence. Once people are more aware and trained in the rich capabilties of this program, its only a matter of time before Google Buzz becomes as popular in use as both Facebook and Twitter as a social media innovation. The buzz is certainly beginning to be generated about Google Buzz and what it can do for businesses. It’s accessible, easy to use, and has the right features to make it a strong contender to replace Facebook and Twitter as “the” social media marketing tools.

The Easy Way To Start Business Blogging

January 19, 2011 in Business Advice, Business Blogging, Inbound Marketing

Author: Jane Van Velsen

What I adore about blogging is that anyone can do it!

The question is though, should everyone be blogging? Blogs have been around since 2003 and over the years easy to use blogging applications like WordPress, Blogger and Typepad have emerged to make it so much easier. Easy to use blogging platforms don’t make blogging a complete smooth ride though. Why?

First off, you need to stop and think about why you need to start a blog. Is it to drive an existing website? Introduce a new product or service? Get consumers to buy that product? You really need to stop and consider why and how you will be doing the blogging. Are you going to dedicate hours of your time to ensure that the content is relevant and of value? Will you be posting yourself? Would you rather hire someone to run it for you?

Unfortunately many people start a blog and abandon it within the first few weeks and this damages your business profile and branding. How can you gain trust from an audience if you’re not talking to them on an ongoing basis? You need to set the parameters and goals you intend to achieve with your blog, much like any other marketing programme. To do that you need to understand the basics about blogging.

Do you really know what a blog is? What it does?

A blog is a publishing application of social media and it works as the hub or control panel for all your inbound marketing activity. Blogs are a perfect way to develop online visibility because they are not costly and yet, with the right input, the reach of a well developed business blog is akin to that of a million pound advertising campaign. Business blogging suits most business types including writers, small businesses, marketing consultants, financial advisers, event managers, speakers and others allowing them to establish their online visibility and be seen as market leaders in their arena.

Blogs allow you to build a dialogue with your readers/potential customers as they can post comments, email you and if you want them to add value to your blog as guest authors which means you get more than one point of view for your readers. In this way you build conversations and trust with your readers and develop online relationships where your reader begins to trust your input and advice and is more likely to recommend you to a friend, pass your message along or simply buy from you directly.

Blogs are easy to use and update and, with a bit of social media activity to support it, you can get your message out there instantly. Perfect for busy entrepreneurs!

You do need to post a couple of times a week though and Id stress that you must post unique and fresh content! Your content needs to be useful, informative or entertaining and you need to make sure that search engines like it too. Remember that your blog is an interactive site, not a static website. Its where you allow visitors to engage with you and your business on a one to one and where you can show the human side of your business.

Why is this so important?

Like every business meeting you have in the real world, the meetings and conversations you have on your blog allow you the opportunity to build credibility in your audiences eyes. Its not a hard sell. You engage your audience to gain trust and increase visibility of your business online in a natural way.

Blogs don’t stand alone though. It serves as the main cog in the works the hub for all your social media activity and forms a considerable part of the marketing mix these days. Most blogs are used in conjunction with a static website (like your company brochure), a regular communication like an ezine (newsletter) or eshot (shortened version) and a database management and ecommerce system.

So, lets recap: You need to do your homework.

1. Ask yourself the reasons you feel you need a business blog. What do you have to tell your audience?

2. What goals to you want to achieve with the blog? More sales leads? More visibility? Imparting information?

3. Who are you going to be talking to? i.e. who is your ideal client? Make sure that you address their needs.

4. What action do you require from your audience? Just an emotive response? A call? An email? A click through? You must have clear directives to ensure that their action fulfils your goals of the blog overall.

5. What tone should you deliver your blog in? This relates back to the audience type, who you are talking to.

6. How do you want your audience to relate to your blog? What emotions should it induce?

7. What is the core message that you’re trying to promote/establish with the blog. Be clear and concise. Ask yourself why would your audience subscribe to your blog or recommend it to another?

8. Are you going to run it yourself? Do you have time to devote to it for regular updates?

9. Establish your building blocks. Draft a series of initial posts that cement your message in place to your readers and that are inter related.

10. Plan ahead. Know what each weeks content will contain based on your keyword list and categories. Ensure you do your homework. Check out your competition and learn from them or dominate if you are alone in your niche. One of the easiest ways of doing this is to search sites like Technorati.com for blogs using your keywords.

Once you’ve done all this, build your blog! Applications from WordPress, Typepad or Blogger are easy to use and develop. Doing the homework is necessary to ensure that your business blog works correctly from day one. Once your blog is up and running you’ll have a powerful marketing tool at your fingertips to create your online visibility and reap the rewards of your online credibility.

Deciding to employ someone to do it on your behalf is a good way to ensure that your business blog gets the best treatment from its inception. Blogging is time consuming more so when you’ve added the necessary social media to the mix!

If you prefer not to do this yourself, there are freelance business bloggers, like myself, in most areas.

A Very Basic Introduction to Social Networking

January 19, 2011 in Facebook Marketing, Social Marketing, Social Networking Tips

Author: Brandon Cox

I’ve been blogging for almost four years now, but I think I’d still call myself a late adopter. It’s only been within the last year and a half that I’ve begun to realize the power of optimizing my site for search engines, so I spent a couple of years blogging while nobody was listening. I’ve also been slow to catch on when it comes to social networking, but I’m quickly realizing I’m not alone – though many networks seem huge, most people I know still aren’t on them.

I thought I’d take just a few minutes and talk about the power of social networking and why I wish all my friends would jump in with both feet, as well as a couple of warnings…

The Power of Social Media

Social media is difficult to understand. Why is Facebook worth at least $15 billion? Why is MySpace so popular in spite of the ugly and messy designs it normally features? (more on why I don’t use myspace later…) And what in the world is Twitter and why would anybody "tweet?"

Let me sum up the power of social media – it offers the ability for anybody to engage everybody (who is online, that is) about anything. Thousands of blogs begin every day. Many step into the arena without a full understanding of the game, however.

In the 90′s, people went online to learn. We thought it was so cool that you could watch an interactive encyclopedia unfold before your eyes – to visit the zoo, research the Civil War, and find plenty of recipes for Spam. Today people go online to connect. In a recent article I published on another site, I argued that what happened in 1989 when the net went public was akin to what happened in 1455 when the Gutenburg Bible was first printed.

The social networking craze isn’t just a passing fad, it’s a cultural shift. We now see a generation of kids who will never know a world without it. Consider that the most recent presidential election was one in which one party saw the power of social networking and the other did not.

Not everybody has to get involved, however. I don’t think my two living grandmothers would enjoy it one bit, and I don’t think either would care the least about their Twitter grade. Who should get involved then?

  • People who want to connect with their past. (old classmates, genealogy, etc.)
  • People who want to sell something… anything.
  • People who want to join a global conversation… about anything.
  • People who want to share information or research.
  • People who want to speak up no matter who is listening.
  • Pastors and church leaders who want to engage another side of culture.

My own experience has been an interesting one, at least in the last year. I’ve gotten involved in a few political discussions, though this isn’t my thrust. I’ve engaged with people who believe very differently than me about God, the world, and people. I’ve connected with some old friends whom I haven’t seen in years. And I’ve had fun.

Social Media Arenas Worth Entering

I’m sure others would add to this list, but I’m sticking with the basics. I think you have to limit yourself on social media involvement so that you remember that most of your life still needs to be lived in the real world with flesh-and-blood people. But here are a few thoughts on arenas worth entering…

Blogging

I design blogs. I focus primarily on designing sites and blogs that work via WordPress, but if you’re just starting out, I’d recommend going with WordPress.com, a free, hosted blogging environment that allows you to get started. Did I mention it’s free? Talk about relevant stuff and people will comment and join an ongoing conversation. Blog about family, politics, faith, technology, a product, a philosophy of life, photography, cooking, or anything else that peaks your interest.

Facebook

I was a slow adopter of Facebook. I joined and had an inactive account for about six months, then started logging on for a few minutes every few days, which is about my current pace. The beauty of Facebook is in its mysterious way of suggesting people from your past. I’ve talked with old high school and college friends for the first time in a decade. I see pictures of their kids and what careers they are involved in. It’s pretty neat to catch up.

Twitter

I was a slow adopter of Twitter also (see a trend here?). For six months I thought Twitter was the dumbest idea in the world – post a sentence or two, 140 characters or less (so it can be done with text messaging), about whatever you’re doing or writing about right now. People follow you. You can follow people. Still sounds dumb, but I’ve made a few interesting connections here too and my favorite aspect of Twitter is that I can display my updates on my blog (over to the right –>) and it becomes a "micro-blog" of sorts. Further, it automatically syncs with and updates my Facebook status.

Delicious

Delicious offers the simple ability to catalog favorite links in a way that your favorite sites and articles are shared publicly (which is optional), so that others see what’s popular.

That’s about it. I’m not a fan of MySpace – it isn’t moderated closely enough and it’s too open as far as minors are concerned, in my opinion. (Plus the designs of most pages look terrible.) There are hundreds of popular networks and thousands more in the abyss of social media mediocrity, but I’ve limited myself to these, which leads to my last little topic…

Warnings About Social Networking

Here we go:

  1. Don’t get so sucked in that you forget life is still lived off-screen, in fresh air, with human beings.
  2. Don’t waste time. Leisure isn’t the same as time-wasting, but they can overlap.
  3. Don’t open your life up in a dangerous way – don’t post your address or personal information in such a way that invites con-artists and stalkers, and if you’re a minor, stay as private as possible and always talk to your parents about your online activity!
  4. Keep your integrity and don’t look at pornography!!! (or anything close) If you struggle with this, visit PureIntimacy.org.
  5. Don’t get so immersed that you have to have it to feel important.
  6. Realize it only matters for eternity if you’ve been able to communicate the gospel or represent the Kingdom in some way.
  7. Don’t fall for any get-rich-quick schemes. If you think there are a lot of them on late night infomercials, just search for "online marketing!" Then… click away!!
  8. Don’t try to do it all. Choose a few favorite networks and stick with them.
  9. Realize that Google is about reputation management, which is deeply affected by your online activity – don’t do anything to make people hate you.
  10. Don’t forget to connect with me!

At the end of the day, if you don’t join Facebook, life will continue as normal. The world will keep spinning whether you "tweet" or not. Just know that this is where the world is going. Barack Obama knows it. Terrorists know it. Innovative church leaders know it. I just wanted you to be aware.
